The survey of springs within the Biosphere Reserve Rhön was started as early as 1996 by the Hesse Federation for Cave and Karst Research (Landesverband für Höhlen- und Karstforschung Hessen e.V.). So far, the survey was concentrated on the core area of the Biosphere Reserve, the high-altitude pastures of the “Lange Rhön” and semi-natural forests.

One of the aims of the Biosphere Reserve Rhön is the complete survey of all springs within its area. Based on this survey, a multitude of measurements will be formulated for the conservation and improvement of these unique spring habitats. To date, the Rhön is regarded as one of the best surveyed areas in Europe.
